Description

Learn the fascinating double knitting technique by making a practical, beautiful pot holder in this hands-on class at Apple Yarns. Taught by a knowledgeable instructor and limited to just six students, you'll receive plenty of personal attention in a warm, welcoming environment.

What is Double Knitting? Double knitting is the process of knitting two sides of a fabric at once, creating a contrasting image on both sides in reverse colors. The technique is achieved by alternating colors and knits/purls, which then create two connected sides of stockinette. For each contrasting color stitch to create an image, the colors used to knit/purl on each side are swapped. Double knitting is especially great for making insulated and decorative fabrics like scarves or headbands.

What you'll be making: Each knitter will make a double sided, reversible potholder with a design in the middle. Several pattern options will be provided, so that each knitter will get to choose which design resonates most with them to go on their potholder.

🧶 Who this class is for: Knitters who can knit and purl confidently, and aren't afraid to learn to hold two colors of yarn in one hand! Double knitting is for adventurous and patient knitters, if that sounds like you then I invite you to learn this new and delightful skill!

Skills learned:

  • How to read a double knit chart
  • How to keep track of your stitches in coordination with your chart using stitch markers
  • Holding and tensioning two yarns in one hand (we'll go over several ways to find what is most comfortable for you)
  • Construction of a double knit piece
  • How to double knit!

Your class includes:

  • Instruction and inspiration
  • A 10% in-store discount card (valid through the end of the last class session)

Materials needed:

  • Two skeins of 100% cotton, worsted weight yarn. (Aran and DK will work as well)
  • Size US 7 (4.5mm) knitting needles (straight or circular)
    • OR a size of needle comparable to your chosen yarn
  • Size US 5 (3.75mm) double pointed needles (or a size down from your initial needle size if you are adjusting for your yarn weight)
  • Stitch markers (at least 8, in different colors — at least 2 colors).
  • Optional: Tension ring/yarn guide — can be helpful for managing yarns.

IMPORTANT: Your two yarns MUST be identical in all but color! Preferably the same yarn in different colors, and 100% COTTON. Anything with ANY amount of acrylic or similar synthetic materials will melt if exposed to heat. If your two If your two yarns are even just a little different in weight (thickness), it can really throw off your project because it will pucker! No one wants a puckery potholder! Sometimes wool is used for potholders, but we will be using cotton since wool is less resistant to direct exposure to high heat (it will singe more than cotton will).
