The Joy of Going Sleeveless: Why I Stopped Knitting Sleeves (and You Might Want to, Too)
Let’s be honest: sleeves are the worst. You cast on a gorgeous sweater, cruising through the body with excitement and joy. Then… it happens. You reach the sleeves. Suddenly, your once-thrilling project turns into sleeve island—a desolate, repetitive place where motivation goes to die.
So, I made a decision: I stopped knitting sleeves. And guess what? I haven’t looked back.
1. More Finished Projects, Less Guilt
We all have that half-finished sweater buried in a project bag somewhere—body done, sleeves untouched. By ditching sleeves altogether, I’ve actually finished more sweaters. Cropped, cap-sleeved, sleeveless: they’re wearable, beautiful, and DONE.
2. Stylish & Seasonal
Sleeveless knits are perfect for layering. Toss one over a long-sleeve shirt, turtleneck, or dress and you’re ready for fall. Plus I don't need the extra bulk under a winter coat.
3. Save That Yarn
Sleeves eat yarn, skipping them means you can splurge on other yarns.
4. Skip the Sleeve Math
No more sleeve shaping, counting decreases, or playing the “is this sleeve the same length as the other one?” game. Life is too short for sleeve math.
5. Fewer UFOs (Unfinished Objects)
If sleeves are the thing standing between you and a finished sweater, then why not skip them?
6. Freedom to Reimagine Sweater Design
Going sleeveless opens up a whole world of creativity.
So, if you find yourself dreading Sleeve Island, give yourself permission to stop.
