Be Confident with Yarn Substitutions
Match the Yarn Weight
When your pattern calls for sport-weight yarn? Use another sport weight to keep sizing close—but always double-check. Not all sport weights are equal. One sport yarn may be thicker or stretchier than another. You also want to take into consideration yarn texture and fiber.
Always Knit a Gauge Swatch
- This step is non-negotiable if you want your sweater to fit.
- Use the recommended needles
- Knit at least a 4"x4" swatch
- Block it like you’ll block the finished sweater
- Count your stitches and rows per inch
- Adjust needle size to match the pattern’s gauge
Compare Fiber Content - Matching fiber = better fit, shape, and durability.
Substitute with a yarn that behaves like the original:
- Wool = elastic and warm
- Cotton = breathable, less stretchy
- Alpaca = soft with drape
Calculate Total Yardage
Don’t match by skein—match by total yards/meters.
Consider Color & Texture
- Solids show off stitch patterns
- Variegated may pool or hide texture
- Smooth vs. fuzzy yarns give different finishes
